05-25-10 FAYETTE COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE LAUNCHES DRUNK DRIVING
CRACKDOWN FOR MEMORIAL DAY HOLIDAY WEEKEND “MAJOR
ENFORCEMENT INCLUDES THE OPERATION OF A SOBRIETY CHECKPOINT”
Fayette County Sheriff Vernon Stanforth announced today that deputies
will be out in full force during the Memorial Day holiday period
beginning May 28, 2010. Deputies from Fayette County will join forces
with members of the Washington Court House Police Department and the
Ohio State Highway Patrol to take part in an aggressive enforcement
campaign to crackdown on impaired driving. The enforcement operation
will last throughout the holiday weekend. The enforcement effort will
also include the operation of a sobriety checkpoint during the holiday
weekend, aimed at deterring, and intercepting impaired drivers.
Currently, the location of the checkpoint is undisclosed. The
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, International
Association of Chiefs of Police, the Buckeye State Sheriff’s Association
and the Presidential Commission on Drunk Driving all support the use of
sobriety checkpoints to achieve an increased understanding by the
public, of the risk of detection of driving under the influence of
alcohol and / or drugs. It has been shown that this increased risk is an
effective deterrent to impaired drivers. Support in operating the
upcoming checkpoint will be provided by members of the Fayette County
Sheriff’s Office, Washington Court House Police Department, Ohio State
Highway Patrol, and the Ohio Department of Transportation. Drunk driving
is one of America’s deadliest crimes. With so many events taking place
during the holiday weekend, including the graduation commencements, it
is important to send a message to those who choose to get behind the
wheel while impaired, said Stanforth. “Make no mistake. Our message is
simple. No matter what type of vehicle you drive – if we catch you
driving impaired, we will arrest you. No exceptions”, said the sheriff.
We will be out in force in a cooperative effort with the Police
Department and the State Highway Patrol to get more drunk drivers off
the road – and save lives that might otherwise be lost. “Driving with a
BAC of .08 or higher is illegal in every state. Yet we continue to see a
tragic number of people with debilitating injuries or killed as a result
of impaired driving. This careless disregard for human life must stop.
To help ensure that happens, law enforcement in Fayette County is
dedicated to arresting impaired drivers wherever and whenever we find
them”, said Stanforth. Drunk driving is simply not worth the risk.
Not only do you risk killing yourself or someone else, additionally you
likely face jail time, the loss of your driving privileges, higher
insurance rates, attorney fees and dozens of other expenses.
Sheriff Stanforth said that his office participates in national programs
including, Click It or Ticket and Drunk Driving: Over the Limit, Under
Arrest. These programs are organized by the U.S. Department of
Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)
which focuses on combining high-visibility enforcement with heightened
public awareness through advertising and publicity. This year, as
in years past will put everyone on notice that if they are caught
driving impaired, they will be arrested. Additional information
concerning the sobriety checkpoint operation will follow. For more
information or questions about the enforcement program, please contact
the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office at (740) 335-6170.
